Located in Columbia City, this single-family residential project is located on a 25' x 100' lot, making the interior dimension of the house just 12' at the widest. Designed as a spec house for a local developer, many of the architects and contractors he approached claimed the lot was 'unbuildable' - until he found our office. Managing to create a 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath home that took advantage of every square inch was the project necessity, but broadcasting the ability to create a design other than the obtrusive box-like structures as seen on similar lots around Seattle was the overall goal. We originally called the project the "upside down" house, because we chose to burry the house halfway into the ground in order to achieve two stories with the lot's height limitations.
